Mr Oliver O’Donovan
Consultant Gynaecologist
About MR O’Donovan
A consultant gynaecologist experienced managing all benign (non-cancerous) gynaecological conditions, with specialist expertise in laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery, gynaecological ultrasound, endometriosis and pelvic pain, fertility, fibroids and heavy periods.
Oli holds an NHS consultant post at University Hospitals Bristol, where he leads the St Michael's Endometriosis Centre (accredited by the British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy). He is also a consultant fertility specialist at The Bristol Centre for Reproductive Medicine (BCRM, http://www.fertilitybristol.com). His private practice is conducted at The Spire Hospital in Bristol.
After qualifying from Imperial College School of Medicine he completed most of his junior training in obstetrics and gynaecology in the South West of England, before moving to the London and Oxford areas for specialist training.
He is particularly expert in the diagnosis (including ultrasound) and management of endometriosis and subfertility, although has a broad experience of all benign (non-cancerous) gynaecological problems.
He has published and presented (nationally and internationally) on many topics related to fertility, endometriosis and minimal access surgery, and is regularly invited to teach on courses. He is keenly involved in research and teaching (both at undergraduate and postgraduate level), and is active within the British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (BSGE); currently he is on the endometriosis centres subcommittee. He is a trustee of The Endometriosis Foundation (www.the endometriosis foundation.org).
Oli prides himself on collaborating to the highest level with both patients and colleagues to provide outstanding quality patient-centred care.
Specialist EXpertise
The areas in which Mr O'Donovan has specialist skills and interests
Laparoscopic surgery
An expert laparoscopic (key hole) surgeon
Oli was awarded one of only five national training posts in advanced laparoscopic (key-hole) surgery, which he completed at University College London Hospital (UCLH). He manages all benign gynaecological conditions through laparoscopic surgery, including endometriosis, fibroids, heavy menstrual bleeding and subfertility. The advantages of laparoscopic procedures are well recognised and include less pain, scarring and infection risk, and faster recovery/return to work.
Hysteroscopic Surgery
An expert hysteroscopic (womb cavity) surgeon
Whilst at UCLH he also completed advanced training in all diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy (e.g. polyps, fibroids, intrauterine adhesions and treatments for heavy periods). This minimally invasive approach allows many common problems to be treated as a day case (go home on the same day).
Gynaecological Ultrasound
Specialist expertise in diagnosis of endometriosis
Oli has expert experience in transvaginal gynaecological ultrasound. His specialist training means he is able to diagnose significant endometriosis. Only a small number of people have this particularly specialist skill, which usually allows him to diagnose and manage endometriosis at the first appointment without the need for further imaging (i.e. MRI scan) or diagnostic laparoscopy.
Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain
Diagnosis and treatment of all forms of the disease, including the most severe and complex cases.
Oli worked for two and a half years at one of the largest endometriosis centres in the UK with world -renowned endometriosis experts and surgeons. He is the lead for the BSGE accredited St Michael's Endometriosis Centre in Bristol, and receives referrals from all around the region for expert advice and care. His ultrasound skills mean that he can usually diagnose or exclude endometriosis at the first clinic appointment and discuss/start ongoing management straightaway.
Fertility
Diagnosis and treatments for fertility and miscarriage
Oli is a consultant at the Bristol Centre for Reproductive Medicine (http://www.fertilitybristol.com). He trained at the University College London Hospital Reproductive Medicine Unit and the Centre for Reproductive and Genetic Health (CRGH), becoming skilled in all aspects of diagnosis and treatment of women/couples with difficulty getting pregnant. This includes ovulation induction (OI), intrauterine insemination (IUI), IVF/ICSI and fertility surgery. He is particularly interested and qualified in treating those fertility patients with endometriosis or fibroids.
Heavy Periods
Diagnosis and treatment of causes
Advanced skills in ultrasound, laparoscopy and hysteroscopy mean Oli can diagnose the cause and offer all treatments for heavy periods.
Fibroids
Diagnosis and treatments
Oli is experienced with all non-surgical and surgical methods for the management of fibroids- whether that be for heavy bleeding, pressure symptoms or fertility issues. His skills mean that the majority of operations can be carried out using minimally invasive techniques (laparoscopy and hysteroscopy).
